Under the Peer

The California coast is a truly magical place. The Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier is a special place. It is of the world’s biggest research piers, and it is used for boat launching and a variety of experiments operated by the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Named for Ellen Browning Scripps (1836-1932), the most significant donor to the institution in its formative years. Born in London, Ellen emigrated to the United States with her father in 1844 and grew up on a farm in Illinois.

Blending man-made architecture with nature. I spent hours under this peer when I lived for a few months in La Jolla a few years ago. Someday I could see nothing because of the blanket of mist covered the ocean. On other days I have seen stunning sunsets. So finally, I decided in March 2020 to capture the sunset from below the pier. I made several shots during and after the sunset and blended them in post.

When I walked away from the shoot, I was confident that it worked out well. I’m loving it! And I’m glad to share that feeling with you.
